“Beneath the surface of many romances that evolve into partnerships, there is a depth not visible to outside observers. Elsa and Albert Einstein liked each other, understood each other, and perhaps most important…were amused by each other. So even if it was not the stuff of poetry, the bond between them was the a solid one. It was forged by satisfying each other’s desires and needs, it genuine, and it worked in both directions.” Einstein, Walter Isaakson

Something in the back of my mind (a really messy old attic) is the thought that ol’ Al was not, shall we say, always monogamous. Or am I thinking of about a bazilion other guys, not ol’ Al? Something scandalous back there somewhere? Or not?
Yes. There was a scandal back in his early days. he simply left his first wife–and the mother of his sons–for another woman. And he was pretty much a self-absorbed, absent father. He and his first wife, before they were married, had a child. A daughter. They gave her to friends, believing that keeping her were would a continuing scandal. Einstein and the daughter never saw each other again. He had an eye for the ladies, as they say, though most of his attractions were of the unconsumated kind. Basically, like so many “greats” he was a thorough-going narcicisst and essentially introverted–his mind for the most part buried in a formula. Also, like so many “greats,” history set aside his relationsl misdeeds, simply because he was, well, Albert Einstein.
